Chapter Sixteen

If Chelsea’s life seemed to ramp up after the Food and Wine Festival—more interviews, endless Zoom calls with Jada and the network to plan her second season—Bryce’s got blissfully back to normal. Well, normal with the added bonus of dating Chelsea. It was the sort of new normal he could get behind. Low-key dinners, cozy nights, and more sex than he’d had since his early twenties. Sometimes her place, sometimes his.

Easy.

He’d started to give up hope that easy could be anything more than code for casual. More than the blips that faded and false starts and women not looking for anything serious. Easy like he and Chelsea clicked in all the ways that mattered, like they wanted all the same things. Like he’d finally found what he’d been looking and waiting for all along.

Kate would riddle him with questions if he started talking like that. Questions about what Chelsea’s plans were, her intentions. But today, with Chelsea still asleep in his bed and advising season kicking off at work, he let himself simply enjoy it. It was a nice vibe to take into his eight a.m. group advising session.

Bryce offered friendly smiles and a few nods of recognition to the students who shuffled into the classroom. They settled into seats, dropping booksacks and pulling out laptops. A few would probably do homework or surf the internet during his presentation, but he’d made the commitment years ago not to police that sort of thing. One, because he hated being the heavy and two, because students would get out what they put in. Which was one of the points he would make in this presentation and every other one he did over the course of the semester.

“Good morning and welcome to the advising kickoff for first-year students intending majors in history or history with the secondary education track. If we haven’t met before, I’m Bryce Cormier, an advisor in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Student Services Office. And yes, that’s a mouthful. It’s a big name but a small office, full of people who want to help you succeed.”

He got a decent number of chuckles for eight o’clock in the morning, which always felt like a win. He ran through his slides, handing out postcards with QR codes that would direct students to online versions of the information. Students asked about finding electives, getting into closed sections, the ability to pick up a minor or double major. Standard fare for meetings like this, but he never got bored. It didn’t have quite the satisfaction of one-on-ones, but this was how he made that initial connection that would lay the foundation for more in-depth conversations about classes and curriculum and, often, life.

After wrapping up the formal presentation, he set down the clicker and perched on the old wooden table at the front of the room. “Don’t forget that if you want to meet with a faculty advisor, you need to bring a copy of your degree audit. They literally won’t talk to you without it.
